Limoges T&V 10+ Pitcher 1903-1905 Hand Painted Pickard LeRoy Gooseberris withGold

Elegant Decorative T&V (Tressemann & Vogt) Fine China TALL PITCHER, Striking Hand Painted at PICKARD STUDIO by Renowned ARTIST M. DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright & realistic.

This was hand painted at the Pickard Studio by the artist M. Rost LeRoy on a blank of fine white china which has washes changing from yellow to pink to black. The whimsical design has a large spray on the right side with a smaller spray on the left side. The wide gold band at the top has embossing and scalloping that swoops down inside the pitcher making it very pretty. This band is irregular dropping down behind the gooseberries with some parts of the gold having white enamel dots on the gold for highlights.

The gold is solid below the widest part of the diameter and is applied by a technique for which M. Rost LeRoy was well known.

The white dots are also sprinkled over other parts of the painting. The decorative pitcher is beautiful and could be used for a variety of purposes. The artist's signature is near the bottom right of the handle in a light yellow. It is difficult to see and read, but look at photo #4. CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors and no crazing.

Look in the photos to see this. The gold is beautiful; the only wear we can find is pointed out in photo #9.

The edges are not nicked. DIMENSIONS: The pitcher handle to spout measures 8" with a maximum diameter of 6" and a height of 10 3/4. The top diameter is 3 7/8. It is hand painted by the Pickard artist & signed M. HISTORY/MARKS: Begun in the 1850's, Vogt & Dose became Tressemann & Vogt when Emillien Tressemann joined the company in 1882.

This was essentially a decorating studio which began manufacturing their own china in 1891 in Limoges, France. The company continued until it was dissolved due to the retirement of Tressemann in 1907. T&V is well known for its quality whiteware and boldly decorated hand paintings.

The marks used on this bowl are the manufacturers underglaze mark in green referenced in Mary Frank Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition as mark #7. In addition, there is also the brown overglaze decorator's mark Hand Painted China W. Reed's Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China.

Pickard China has a long history dating back to 1893 when Wilder Pickard established his company in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Towards the end of the century, he moved his business to Chicago and specialized in hand painted porcelain and art pieces. He listed this as his business location through 1902. Picard gradually acquired the use of a number of nearby horse barns evolving into a fragmented studio. He still depended on much cottage work. He moved to Ravenwood Studio in 1905 on the North Side of Chicago. LeRoy first worked at Pickards in 1898 to 1903. He moved to the Edward W. Donath Studio in 1906 staying until 1928.

He was a prolific painter of subjects such as cherry sprays, strawberry sprays, apple blossoms and gooseberries with an occasional bird. His compositions with dark backgrounds and embellished gold borders with raised paste were some of Pickards best in this style. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
